Afghan Support Project

Updated: Sep 18, 2021

Explore ways to come alongside and support Afghans arriving in the United States

Please tag this page and refer to it for ways to engage in the Afghan Support Project. The flow of Afghan refugees through Arizona is in flux from week to week, and so information on this page will be updated occasionally to reflect current needs and opportunities.

The partner organizations listed below are friends of Central and we have confidence in their efforts to support Afghans locally, domestically, and internationally. As you explore options, we would love for you to consider ways to include your family, your friends, your co-workers, your youth group, or your small group to partner together to bless Afghans arriving in our city!

FINANCIAL DONATION OPTIONS

  • Matthew House - Organization run by Central's Leisa McDonald. All finances donated will go towards resettlement efforts in here Arizona.

  • World Relief - National and international partner organization.

TANGIBLE DONATION OPTIONS - These organizations are long-time partners of Central Christian Church in refugee resettlement work here in the Phoenix area. For donations of clothes, hygiene products, games, toys, furniture, household items, and much more please refer to the links below.

*Note: While we appreciate your generosity, please do not use this as an opportunity just to clean out your closets. Please plan to donate items that are of good quality, free of stains and tears and breaks, with all appropriate parts and pieces present. Thank you.

RESETTLEMENT TEAMS and SERVING ARRIVING AFGHAN FAMILIES

Immediate support

Afghans have already arrived in Phoenix, and more will be coming in late September. There are immediate opportunities to serve meals, make grocery runs, play with kids, and have conversational times with adults. Any men out there play chess?!? The Afghan men enjoy a good game and most of them speak English well! To learn more about these opportunities and to get signed up to serve, please contact Central Christian Church's International Director Matt Nutter at matt.nutter@centralaz.com

Resettlement support

In the coming weeks, the Afghan families will begin the process of finding a home, enrolling kids in school, finding a job, getting a driver's license and a car, and the multitude of other tasks necessary to begin the daunting task of settling into a new culture and country. Central Christian Church is forming Welcome Teams to come alongside individual families over the coming weeks and months. It's a big effort, but a team of people working together shares the duties and is a beautiful thing! Please contact Matt Nutter (matt.nutter@centralaz.com) or our partner organization Matthew House to join a resettlement team.

*Note: For security reasons, anyone participating in these activities may be asked to complete a background check. If you are cleared to serve at Central, you are good to go!

PRAY

  • Pray for Afghan believers to remain strong in their faith in Jesus, experience peace in their hearts, and not lose hope. Ask God to protect them and keep them from harm.

  • Pray for refugees, newly displaced by this crisis—to find provision for practical needs and stability amid chaos.

  • Ask the Lord to use this crisis to draw those who are weary to find rest and peace in Christ alone.

  • Pray for great numbers of Afghan men, women, and children to turn to the Lord and be saved. (Isaiah 45:22)

LEARN

Refugee Simulation - October 23, 2021

Experience Life as a Refugee Family,

Join us for an interactive experience where you take on the role of a refugee family; fleeing for your lives and struggling to find a new life beyond the challenges of a refugee camp.

Experience the difficult decisions involved in this life of upheaval and learn the process of applying for acceptance to be resettled in the U.S. by visiting "officials" from different vetting organizations.

Your refugee family must pass interviews at each of these stations on your journey to resettlement. This Refugee Simulation will increase your knowledge, empathy, and understanding of the journey traveled by refugees around the world.

Kids 10 and older are welcome!

Our friends at Welcome to America Project offer great opportunities to meet and serve refugees in an easy first step. Over a few short hours on a Saturday morning, help deliver furniture and household items to homes of newly-settled refugees. And then hear their stories. This is a great activity for your entire family or life group!
